EXPRESS RIFLE MADE FOR R. L. WILSON AND FEATURED IN "STEEL CANVAS". MADE BY S. P. ALEXANDER AND ENGRAVED BY LYNTON MCKENZIE. Cal. 45. S# 24. Bbl. 31" tapered octagon with underib is fitted with one standing leaf rear and white bead front sights. A white triangle is set on rear sight below U-notch. Top flat is engraved "Stephen P. Alexander". Patent breech, breech iron, and lock with tall serpentine hammer and front sliding safety are color case hardened and engraved with 70% coverage exceptionally well cut and shaded open scroll. Trigger plate is case hardened also and has stylized pineaplle finial. Blued trigger guard with more scroll on bow has serial number on tang, which extends to case hardened steel gripcap. Engraver's signature "L. McK" is on trigger plate in front of trigger guard bow (Lynton McKenzie, generally acknowledged to have been one of the world's finest engravers, and noted for this type of scroll). Horn capped half stock of lightly figured and marbled European walnut measures 14 3/8" over blued and engraved steel buttplate (scroll engraving also by McKenzie). Stock features point pattern checkering around grip and forend. A sling eye on toeline matches that attached to second plain ramrod pipe on bbl. Horn tipped rosewood ramrod with brass tail mounts through two pipes and well filed thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: transcribed copy of Lynton McKenzie's obituary. CONDITION: exceptionally fine, appears unfired. Metal retaining essentially all of its original finish. Wood has a few handling marks in its original oil with two or three scratches on left side of comb and a few more on side panel. Mechanically fine. Bore is bright and shiny.
