FINE QUALITY MID 18TH CENTURY FRENCH FLINTLOCK

PISTOL. Cal. 57. NSN. Bbl. 8 3/4" oct. to swamped rnd. w/ gold damascened decoration on top. Lock w/ chamfered & elongated plate has serpentine cock, inset faceted pan, unbridled frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous finial. There is some good quality engraving at tail & indecipherable maker’s name & “PARIS” under pan. Walnut stock is carved w/ raised fields around all major components & w/ relief scroll behind bbl. tang & thimble. Beads are carved along ramrod & bbl. channels. Furniture is iron & nicely engraved. Knob butt cap has side spurs, trigger guard has foliate finial & broad side plate has fancy file shaping. Baleen ramrod w/ bone tip & steel tail is held by beaded pipe & matching thimble. CONDITION: bbl. w/ traces of original blue finish is mostly brown. There is considerable loss to damascening. Lock & iron furniture have old brown surfaces w/ light cleaning showing silver highlights. Stock w/ most of an old, possibly original finish has numerous marks & appears sound w/ no noted cracks or repairs. Rusted bore, lock good. Further study of maker’s name may be profitable.
