Cal. .577, 2 1/4" Pinfire (for very early rimless case). (585 groove diameter). S# 645. Finely made 16-sided Damascus bbls. are engraved "B. Denyer 131 Holborn Hill. London" (working at this address 1851-1875) on full length slightly raised rib. Lg. single standing leaf U-notch rear sight is dovetailed through in front of 4 delicate folding leaves marked for 80, 100, 150, & 200 yds. A silver bead front sight is also dovetailed through. London black powder proofs are on bbl. flats. A sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Rnd. bodied early Lefaucheux type lever over guard action is fitted w/ back spring peninsula locks w/ rnd. bodied serpentine hammers having nicely filed dolphin shaped heads. Action & locks are engraved w/ 60% coverage of very nicely cut shaded scroll w/in scroll borders. Maker's name & "London" is on each lockplate behind game scenes w/ running stag on left & standing stag on right. A recumbent stag is on trigger guard bow & S# is on tang. Well figured & lightly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/8" over steel buttplate w/ 1" top spur. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip & a vacant silver oval along w/ sling loop is on toeline. Matching fully checkered splinter forend w/ inlet steel tip attaches to bbls. w/ captive side bolt through shaped & engraved steel escutcheons. CONDITION: good w/ repairs, bbls. retaining a considerable amount of what appears to be original brown finish w/ fair definition to pattern, but bbls. have darkened overall. Action & locks retain traces of color, but are mostly gray brown. Stocks retain most of what appears to be an old oil refinish done at time of interesting repair at grip consisting of 4 crenelated 3" x 1/2" German silver strips neatly inletted & screwed into wrist. Bores are fair to good w/ strong rifling, somewhat pitted throughout. Action is tight. Locks are good. An interesting early rifle. (01-18405/MGM94). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
