GUN BY ABESSER & MERKEL MADE FOR SLOAN’S. Cal. 20 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 21990. Bbl. 28" demi-bloc, engraved “Sole U.S. Agents Sloan’s Sporting Goods Co. Inc. New York N.Y.” in milled out portion of slightly raised flat matted solid rib. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ S# & no proofs are visible (most likely hidden by top portions of 3 piece forend). Case hardened, dbl. Kirsten O/U action w/ ornamental sideplates features non-automatic safety & dbl. triggers. Action is nicely filed & is engraved w/ 80% coverage well detailed shaded scroll w/ some oak leaf accents. Fences are relief engraved in oak leaf motif & there is relief engraved scroll on top. Bottom of action is engraved “ABESSER & MERKEL” “SUHL” “GERMANY”. Sideplates are engraved w/ matching scroll surrounding nicely detailed rounded vignettes of canines & game birds in fairly well detailed backgrounds; a spaniel grabs a fallen duck while 3 of its compatriots fly off in the distance on left lockplate & a snarling wolf scatters a group of 3 geese on right. Horn capped pistol grip buttstock of well marbled European walnut measures 15" over checkered wood 15/16" lengthening piece. Skip line checkering w/ lg. flourishes into butt is at grip & a lg. vacant German silver oval is on toeline. There are white inlaid diamond shaped drop points behind lockplates. Matching long 3 piece ejector forend has Deeley release. MEASUREMENTS: BORE DIA.: Bottom .629. Top .627. BORE RESTRICTIONS: Bottom .030 Full. Top .027 Mod. WALL THICKNESS: Bottom .012, 3" area on left side approx. 9" behind muzzle. Top .015 along good portion of left side. DAH: 3". DAC: 1 3/4". WEIGHT: 5 lbs 14 oz. CONDITION: very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining about 90% original blue w/ some scattered freckling & high edge wear. Action & lockplates retain over 90% original case hardening color w/ some silvering of highlights, which pleasingly enhances the depth of fine engraving. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish w/ some refinishing of butt associated w/ addition of lengthening piece. There are a fair number of fairly deep marks behind side panels of butt & on left side of forend. Bores are bright & shiny w/ very little evidence of repaired dents. Action is tight. Mechanically fine w/ strong, well timed ejectors. (21-2997/MGM). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
