FINE RECENTLY DISCOVERED “ATTIC CONDITION”
CONFEDERATE PALMETTO PISTOL. Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 8.5". This superior example was from the collection of Dr. Fred Novy, the authority on William Glaze & the Palmetto Armory. He has studied & made notes on over 100 of these pistols & this is the latest. “unusual, untouched" model 1842 cavalry pistol made by Wm. Glaze in Columbia, South Carolina in 1852-1853 for the state of South Carolina. Glaze made & delivered 1,000 of these cavalry horse pistols in 1853. Later, during the war for southern independence, these pistols served w/ South Carolina cavalry units in Confederate service. The few survivors of this war had seen hard service & were at various times cleaned up so it is exceptional to find one that has not been cleaned & polished & not had the stock sanded. Here is just such an example. The lock & bbl. are original & virtually untouched. The stock has the original Palmetto Armory oil finish intact. Such "untouched"-"attic" examples, particularly of Southern carried arms, are very rare Indeed. Lock is very good w/ well struck Palmetto Armory insignia forward of the hammer & “COLUMBIA / S C. 1852” to the rear & has not ever been cleaned or polished since leaving the Palmetto Armory. The lock works are excellent w/ like new fire blued parts which function perfectly. Stock has the original Palmetto oil finish & is very good overall. There is an old obvious chip at the lock tail & numerous scratches, scuffs, scrapes, but the edges remain sharp & overall notably "untouched". The lock mortise is as fresh & new looking as the day it was cut. The brass fittings all have a beautiful "untouched" patina of age. The 1842 ramrod & swivels are also exactly "as issued". Bbl. is very good & was lightly cleaned some long ago to remove the Palmetto Armory plum brown finish & turn the bbl. bright. However, some areas of Palmetto brown remain, in untouched areas at the end of the bbl. tang & bottom of the breech. On the bbl. tang is the date "1853" which is clearly stamped. Oddly, the breech was never stamped w/ the typical Palmetto "P" / "V" & proof. Nor was the "Wm.GLAZE & CO." mark struck on the left flat. All that can be said is that, such irregularities are not unusual on Palmetto pistols. There is a mating mark on the Breech Plug "V9" & matching "V" marks on both the Breech Plug & the bottom of the bbl. How this situation came to be is known only to William Glaze & Palmetto Armory workers. All that we can say for certain is that this unusual Palmetto Pistol is all original, intact & as issued. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter of authority by Dr. Fred Novy. CONDITION: very good-fine overall. All original, complete & matching. Brass has medium mustard patina. Iron components have an overall smooth mottled gray patina. Stock is well fit, hand worn patina, scattered cosmetic blemishes, 1/2" old well patinaed chip rear of lock, markings are very good. Mechanically fine w/ clear, smooth, dark bore. (01-18993/JS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-6,000.
