FROM PETERSBURG BATTLEFIELD. 70.5mm x 48.2mm Beautifully patinated Virginia style CSA belt plate on belt w/ associated note written by member of 118th NY who collected it “the boy must have been dead 2 weeks, grass was fully 8 inches high around him when I took the belt. J.T. Warner late of Co. K 118th NYV Infantry” Jefferson T. Warner was 19 year old when he enlisted in 1862, he was promoted corporal in mid 1864, was badly wounded and had left leg amputated, discharged September 12, 1865. Jefferson misidentifies unit as 2nd GA Cav (who was not in VA), could have been 2nd GA infantry who were at Petersburg & were part of Longstreet’s Corps who are most often associated w/ Virginia style CSA buckle w/ the large periods. CONDITION: fine overall, smooth light chocolate brown patina, still has body curve as made, belt has craquelure at bends, tag is soiled & stained, cracked, & fragile but all text discernible, & protected in plastic sleeve.
