George was born in Harpers Ferry, VA. He was raised under the guardianship from the time he was born to Frederick Sheetz where he learned from one of Virginia's master gunsmiths. George was probably finishing his apprenticeship about 1820, where he worked no later than 1833 as he sold his gunmaking tools that year & moved to Illinois.
