CIVIL WAR CAVALRY OFFICER SABER. 35" Blade, etched in 21" panels w/ patriotic American motifs including motto: “UNION AND VICTORY”. Ricasso is stamped on both sides “S.C. BUNTING JR.” in arch above “PHILA”. Samuel Bunting Jr. advertises in 1862 as a sword mfg. though according to Don Thillman’s excellent text on cavalry & artillery sabers. Bunting only assembled or retailed swords. A majority of Bunting swords are enlisted & only 2 cavalry officers were known, both pictured & described in Thillman’s text. This example makes the 3rd & is in excellent condition, exhibiting unique engraved hilt w/ a cannon filling edge of guard. Scabbard is brass mounted w/ relief cast oak leaf design on sword rings & drag. CONDITION: fine overall, blade retains much of its original polish & luster w/ staining. Brown leather grip retains most of its original polish w/ few sm. scuffs, tripled brass wire wrap still retains much of its original gilding. Protective leather washer has pinked edge. Scabbard body has iron patina w/ pitting. Scabbard mounts retain most of their original gilding. (02-14894/JS). $4,500-6,500.
