Cal. 58 RF. NSN. 5,000 Model 1861 Percussion muskets were converted at the Springfield Armory in 1865. Bbl. 37 3/4". Barleycorn front sight w/ single folding leaf rear sight. Upward pivoting breech block is released by thumb latch on right side. Rack & pinion ejector system. Springfield marked lock w/ 1865 date. 3 Band fastened walnut stock, right ear has partially visible "ESA" (Erskine S Allin) cartouche. Iron fittings include musket buttplate, trigger guard w/ rear mounted sling swivel, bbl. bands, nose cap & tulip tip ramrod. Rear sling swivel is mounted on rear of trigger guard bow. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: socket bayonet. CONDITION: bright finished bbl. has acquired a light brown patina w/ age. Muzzle portion of bbl. is still generally bright where it had been protected by a socket bayonet. Breech block, rear sight & lock have added black painted finish. It appears that much of the original finish has been protected by the paint & survived. Stock has moderately worn original finish showing scratches, handling marks & spots of staining. Buttplate, trigger guard & other iron fittings have also acquired a mild patina appearance. Exceptionally nice bore retains sound rifling. (01-19512/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,750.
