BERKS COUNTY. Cal. 45 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 43 1/4" full oct., signed “I. GEORG”. Overall length 59". Made by a member of the George family from Northern Berks County, North of Kutztown. 4 Piece brass patchbox is typical of those used by the George family & engraved w/ what appears to be an “N” on the door. The rifle has a whale’s tail finial. Toeplate finial engraved similar to the Indian face commonly found on to Lehigh County rifles. Circular brass cheekpiece inlay is held in place by a wood screw, typical of the school. Full brass sideplate also engraved w/ the “N” design. Has a full 7 1/4" brass saddle plate & an English flint lock. It has recently been learned there were 5 gunsmiths w/ in the same area w/ the name “Jacob George”. CONDITION: patchbox release is not working & needs adj. Rifle had been totally broken through the wrist & repaired in period. 10 1/2" Of the forend at the muzzle has been replaced.
