RIFLE. Cal. 52 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 39" full oct. Overall length 54". Bbl. signed “S.B.”. Samuel Baum flintlock curly maple rifle w/ 4-piece brass patchbox w/ 4 piercings. The rifle has a brass comb inlay & a brass saddle plate. Samuel Baum (1789-1840) worked in New Berlin, PA. His son Samuel Baum Jr. worked in his father’s shop as a gunsmith where he later operated an inn. CONDITION: buttplate is wrapped around the toe of the butt to cover the wood lost to shrinkage. Toeplate is missing. Flintlock appears to be a store bought later addition. Appears to have been shortened approx. 3" from the front. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19603/RG).
