SINGLE TRIGGER GAME GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 1/2". S# 1396 (1896). Built on the Beesley designed action that was assigned to Purdey's in the early 1880s, this gun has 30" chopper lump bbls. engraved "F. BEESLEY" (from Purdey's) 2. St. Jame's Street, London, corner of Pall Mall." on swamped game rib. Tops of bbls. are engraved "Whitworth's Fluid Pressed Steel". This is gun #2 of a pair with the number "2" engraved at rear of rib, on top lever and forend iron. Bbl. flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with serial numbers and "Sheaf of Wheat" logos. Coin finished Beesley self opening sidelock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, bushed strikers and single nonselective trigger (trigger guard bow marked "Green's Patent"). Action is engraved with near full coverage well cut rose and scroll. Lockplates are engraved "FROM" "F. BEESLEY" "PURDEY'S" "PATENT", in attractive scrolling device. Bottom of action is engraved "BEESLEY'S" "PATENT". Top lever is engraved "PATENT". Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Straight grip buttstock, of well marbled and lightly figured European walnut, measures 14 1/8" over checkered hard rubber buttplate. Stock features usual drop points, point pattern checkering on diamond hand and vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .731" with .004" flare, L: .731". Restrictions: 0. Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .024", L: .023". STOCK: DAH: 2 3/8". DAC: 1 9/16". CAST: approx. 1/4" off. LOP: 14 1/8". WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 2 oz. CONDITION: good as refinished. Bbls. retaining most of a reblack over scattered light pitting, engraving considerably softened. Action is cleaned to silver gray with light pitting. Stocks show considerable wear, sharp edges rounded, oil refinish over a few marks and checkering recut. Bores are shiny. Right bbl. with a large number of scattered pits. Left bbl. has a few pits and evidence of dent removal about 6" in front of forend. Dents have also been removed from right bbl. 8" behind muzzle. Action is tight. Bbls. slightly off face. "Three pull" single trigger appears to work well. Ejectors will not fire. (01-20906/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
