FRENCH MODEL 1777 L'AN IX MUSKET WITH  CITY GUARD

(RICHMOND, VA?) MARKINGS. Cal. 69. NSN. The 42" rnd. bbl. has no visible marks & is held by 3 spring retained bands. Lockplate is engraved w/ what appears to be "CHARLEVILLE" & features reinforced cock, inset brass pan, friction frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous finial. Walnut stock is iron mounted & has dished out left side of comb. Trigger guard has finger grooves. Carry point in front of trigger guard is branded "CITY GUARD" (consignor's notes state "indicating use by Richmond, VA City Guard. Co. V. 1st Virginia Infantry, in the Civil War"). CONDITION: good. Metal parts show cleaning over dark brown patina w/ scattered light pitting. Stock retains old oil finish & appears to be sound. Surface has many scattered light marks & butt around plate shows considerable water damage. Rusted bore. Lock operable. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20544/MGM).
