BECK. Cal. 38. NSN. The 36 5/8" slim octagon bbl. is fitted w/ U-notch rear & brass blade front sights. Top flat stamped "I. L. Beck" w/ 2 stars at each end (Isaac L. Beck working 1835-40 in Mifflinburg, PA). Trade percussion lock by Golcher has stamp in engraving at tail & on flat faced serpentine hammer. Rifle fitted w/ dbl. set triggers. Full stock appears to be of quilted figure cherry & extends to muzzle w/ 1 1/2" brass cap & pinned to bbl. Brass furniture includes faceted trigger guard w/ spur forming grip. Crescent buttplate has 4" return, & simple rectangular patchbox has 2 tapered sideplates & pierced finial. Lock sideplate is lozenge shaped. A German silver oval at top of grip is engraved "E" & a vacant oval is on face of sm. cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod is held by 2 beaded pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: good. Iron parts retaining nearly all attractive brown patina, brass nicely toned. Wood refinished w/ edges somewhat rounded. Bore is very good w/ strong rifling, a bit dark. Lock & triggers work. Stock shows old repair through wrist w/ rivets evident at top of grip. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19614/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
