Edwin Moore& #39;ss inscribed eaglehead dress sword with gilt and fire blue 32.5& #34; curved blade with fuller.  The upper gilded brass scabbard is inscribed in block caps & #34;COMMODORE/EDWIN W. MOORE/REPUBLIC OF TEXAS/NAVY/1840& #34;.  The sword is unmarked although the eagle head hilt with integral back strap reflects the later embellished rococo styling notable on the & #34;D& #34; shaped knucklebow. An example of a nearly identical eagle is illustrated as plate 13a in American Swords from the Philip
Medicus Collection, p.114. The carved bone grip has turned an amber color and is missing the twisted wire strands. The beautifully executed quillon bears a high relief cast  American martial eagle within the shield shaped langet. The edged langet is further
embellished with 13 stars having & #34;E Pluribus Unum& #34; within a scrolled banner. The upper half of the blued blade is decorated with panoply of two generic gold panels, the center panel incorporating an American shield and stars. The unpolished scabbard has two ring
mounts showing traces of original gilt. No maker is noted.

The bone hilt has a crack along its length with a small piece missing
on the underside near the eagle. The unpolished blade shows severe rust damage penetrating the blue field beneath the langets. The edge of the blade is without chips or knocks but does show area of active rust damage as well. The scabbard is complete and
without dents.
