Antique Screw-Barrel Boxlock Single-Shot Percussion Muff Pistol, likely of French or Belgian origin, #78, approx. .42 cal., 2.25'' round screw-off barrel has watered, Damascus-like brown finish and is numbered ''78''; ''bright'' steel boxlock receiver has a central hammer, low flash guard and a folding trigger that drops upon cocking, embellished with fine floral and feather-like engraving and numbered ''78'' at breech; one-piece ebonized hardwood stock has shell carving at raised aprons behind frame and carved fluting that terminates at the matching buttcap with diamond finial. Mfg'd ca. 1850s-60s. Condition is excellent, ap[pearing as new. Barrel retains approx. 98% original finish, balance of the metal has all of its original ''bright'' finish with only occasional slight toning. Grip with perfect carving and only one or two tiny handling marks. Engraving, markings and edges are sharp; action is crisp; nipple appears as new; bore is clean showing scattered light etching and sharp, nearly-straight multi-groove rifling.
