G. Goulcher Full-Stock Percussion Plains Rifle, # NVSN, .50 cal., 37" heavy octagon barrel, brown and color case hardened finish. Smooth tiger maple full-stock with brass nose cap, full-length hardwood ramrod, brass pipes, trigger guard, patchbox and smooth crescent butt plate. Dovetailed brass blade front sight and fixed "V"-notch rear sight. Lightly engraved lock is marked "G. GOULCHER". Includes a modern buckskin pouch with lead balls, cap tin, and period powder horn with a tasseled cork base. Powder horn shows age with cracks at the decorative spout. Mfg'd in the mid-19th century. Rifle is in good overall condition, with the barrel gone to an even brown patina, showing wear and smoothing of the edges, with some spots of light erosion, and dried oil. Lock and hammer display silvered color case hardened finish with light engraving, marked "G. GOULCHER" on a banner. Stock is in good condition, showing dark striping, with all the escutcheons and barrel wedges removed and filled with wood putty. There is an attractive brass patchbox on the right side of the butt and a brass disc added at the top of the cheekpiece. Action holds at full-cock and functions; set-trigger is also functioning. Bore is dark with surface rust and strong, well-defined rifling. George Goulcher was a New York gunsmith who manufactured locks for commercial sales from 1840-1880. Est.: $300-$500. (Antique)
