GOLD & ENAMEL SOCIETY OF CINCINNATI MEDALLION,
FAMILY OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR MAJOR GENERAL AMOS HALL. The Frederick Clark Hall Gold and Enamel Order of the Cincinnati, made by Bailey, Banks and Biddle. 1 5/8" x 1 5/16", Finely chased gold in the form of an eagle facing left, wings spread & down swept, its head w/ in a circular laurel wreath highlighted w/ green enamel leaves, the white enameled tail feathers flanked by green enamel leaves, the eye enameled red. Eagle's breast has oval medallion; the motto w/ in a white enamel border that reads Societas Cincinnatorum Instituta AD 1783, w/ in the border, the senators present Cincinnatus w/ the sword, his wife & cottage behind him against a lapis enamel sky. Reverse: Cincinnatus at his plow w/ angel above & a village in the distance against a sky of lapis enamel. Gold suspension ring attaches blue & white silk ribbon. Frederick Clark Hall (1813-1900) was admitted to the Connecticut Chapter of Society of the Cincinnati in 1893. He joined under the rule of 1854, based on his great grandfather Major General Amos Hall admission in 1784, Amos Hall’s father Stephen Hall (1739-1783) was an officer in the 7th Connecticut, which by right admitted Amos Hall to the society even though he was only a fifer & enlisted man during the Revolution. Amos was major general during the War of 1812. This Order of Cincinnati medallion had design update & were made by Tiffany of New York and Bailey, Banks and Biddle of Boston. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying the gold medallion is a memorial snuff box to George Washington, 18th century scissors & “2 DWTS” weight for a hand scale, owned by Gen. Amos Hall. Also accompanied w/ this is correspondence concerning this medal w/ the Society of Cincinnati’s headquarters in Washington DC. CONDITION: fine overall, no discernible chipping to enamel, ribbon frayed on edges. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (02-13790/JS). $3,000-5,000.
