WILLIAM EVANS WITH VERY FINELY CARVED FENCES. Cal. 20 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 17736 (1937). Bbl. 28" dovetailed, engraved “WILLIAM EVANS 63 PALL MALL LONDON. S. W.” on very narrow, deeply swamped game rib. Bbl. flats are stamped w/ Birmingham nitro proofs for 1 oz. of shot & “2 1/2” which has been over stamped “3/4”. S# is engraved on bottom of left bbl. Case hardened boxlock action features automatic safety, pivoting 3rd fastener engaging straight rib extension & dbl. triggers. Action is engraved w/ 80% coverage, varying size scroll, makers name is on scroll terminated riband on each side. Fences are beautifully relief carved in grape & grape leaf motif. Blued top lever, floorplate & triggerguard are engraved w/ matching scroll, S# is on triggerguard tang. Lightly figured & marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/8" over tan leather covered pad. Stock also features drop points, flat top point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders at grip & a vacant silver oval on toeline. Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BORE DIAMETER: left .610, right .609. BORE RESTRICTIONS: left .015 Mod, right .000 Cyl. WALL THICKNESS: left .035, right .038. DAH: 2 1/4”. DAC: 1 1/4”+. Cast: very slightly off. WEIGHT: 5 lbs. 14 oz. CONDITION: fine as nicely restored. Bbls. retaining over 90% of a very good quality reblack. Action retains nearly all of a recase hardening color. Colors are quite dark, and not of usual English style. Blued parts retain nearly all of a new immersion blue, engraving on triggerguard somewhat softened. Stocks retain nearly all of an expert oil refinish w/ correct preservation of sharp edges. Pad is relatively new. Bores appear to be bright & shiny but are dirty. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong & in time. Top rib is slightly above rear portion & may need to be relaid, however bbls. do ring. This is a very fine, good handling small bore gun. (21-3528/MGM).
