RIFLE BY J. LONG. Cal. 44. NSN. This attractive rifle has 37 1/4" slightly swamped octagon bbl. engraved "J. Long" on top flat (most likely Joseph of Beavercreek, PA., working circa 1820-1872). Bbl. fitted w/ single "U" notch rear & long brass blade front sights. Percussion trade lock by Elwell has some light scroll engraving & maker's name in oval cartouche in front of flat faced serpentine hammer. Dbl. set triggers are fitted. Full length stock of attractive curly maple extends to muzzle w/ 2" brass cap. Rifle is brass mounted having chamfered trigger guard w/ spur, crescent brass buttplate w/ 4" return & attractive fancy patchbox w/ multiple piercings & scroll finial (cover release in butt). There is incised scroll carving behind sm. cheekpiece w/ brass edge. Rifle has multiple German silver inlays w/ 8 teardrop inlays along bbl. channel, more teardrops & stylized hearts are at grip & an inverted crescent moon is on cheekpiece. A brass wear plate is at balance point on bottom of stock & hickory ramrod is held by 2 octagonal pipes & matching tailpipe. CONDITION: good to very good. Iron parts w/ some cleaning show considerable pitting around drum & are mostly silver gray to brown. Brass is well toned. Wood shows evidence of old oil refinish w/ sharp edges rounded. Dark pitted bore w/ no rifling evident. Lock & triggers operable. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19664/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
