WITH CASE & ACCESSORIES. Cal. 14 bore. S# 6783 (1818). The 30 1/2" skelp twist barrels are engraved "John Manton & Son DOVER STREET" on slightly raised rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with S# and London proofs along with "WF" (William Fullerd barrel forger). Deeply inset patent breeches with sides further cut away to aid in shedding water have inlaid platinum lines and platinum touch holes. Rib extension is feather engraved. Breech iron is engraved with semi relief acanthus scrolls and amorial highlights. Locks, with chamfered plates having rebated tails are fitted with serpentine cocks, Manton patent "V" waterproof pans with platinum line at bottoms, lipped bridled frizzens, engraved "Jno Manton & Son" "Patent" and feather springs with large rollers and bulbous finials. Locks are engraved with feather borders and sprays of scroll. Maker's name over "PATENT" is at centers. Trigger plate has usual pineapple finial. Square front trigger guard with armorial designs on bow, has S# on tang. Stock of dense stump figured European walnut measures 14" over steel buttplate with long top tang engraved with arms. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant silver rectangle is at top of grip. Stock attaches to barrels with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. Rosewood ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under tail) mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple decorated thimble. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 2 3/16". DAC: 1 1/2". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 0 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in what appears to be its original mahogany case. Exterior has circular flush mounted "D" ring handle with pendular hook closure, key escutcheon is tear shaped bone. Interior is lined in green cloth and a John Manton 6 Dover St. small paper label is in lid of the type used from 1815-20. Bottom compartment fits this gun exactly and contains, copper bodied foliage embossed powder flask marked "Sykes Patent", small brass flask with embossed body which is unmarked, unmarked shot flask with dipper type spout, dimpled wad punch stamped "17", steel and mahogany bowtie type pair of turn screws, three polished steel powder and shot containers, small pewter oil bottle, two piece brass and ebony cleaning rod with short handle and long bottom section and a brown leather flint wallet which also contain combination turn screw and vent pick. Locks are housed under two covered compartments with turned bone knobs. CONDITION: very good as partially refinished. Barrels retaining over 90% rebrown with fine definition to pattern, engraving clear. Locks and other iron parts show light cleaning to smooth gray patina. Traces of bright blue remain on feather springs. A considerable amount of original blue remains on trigger guard and buttplate. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original oil finish with a scattering of light marks, checkering recut. Bores are bright, lightly frosted throughout. Locks and frizzens are fine. Case exterior shows a myriad of small marks and dents in its old, possibly original finish. Interior cloth is good with light soiling, compressions and some fading. Accessories are good to fine.
