JOSEPH BOURNE & SON. Cal. 28 Ga. S# 41095. Joseph Bourne made tens of thousands of guns for the trade. Few are found w/ his name. This gun has 28" dovetailed bbls. engraved w/ maker's name & "Birmingham" on very narrow swamped game rib. Bbl. flats stamped w/ older Birmingham Nitro Proofs for 2 1/2" chambers & 1987 London reproofs for the same. Case hardened, rnd. bodied top lever action is fitted w/ peninsula back spring locks having rnd. bodied serpentine hammers. Action & locks engraved w/ 40% coverage rudimentary scroll w/ in geometric borders. Trigger guard w/ matching scroll on bow is unmarked on tang. Straight grip buttstock of lightly fiddle figured European walnut measures 14 3/8" over fancy scroll & deer game scene embossed horn buttplate. Flat top point pattern checkering w/ mullered borders, straight grip & a vacant silver shield is on toe line. Matching splinter forend w/ inlet horn tip has friction spring release. MEASUREMENTS: LOP: 14 3/8". Bore diameter: L- .555, R - .580. Restriction: L - .013 (Mod.), R - .000 (Cyl.). Min. wall thickness: L - .032, R - .030. DAC: 1 3/8". DAH: 2 1/8". Cast about 1" off. WEIGHT: 5 lbs., 4 oz. CONDITION: fine, mostly original. Bbls. retaining over 90% original blue w/ some silvering of sharp edges. Action & locks retain about 30% original case hardening color. Strong where protect, balance is bright silver spotting to gray. Top lever retaining nearly all of it's blue. Trigger guard is silvered on edges of bow & grip. Stocks retains nearly all of what appears to be their original finish w/ light marks, scratches & some added oil. Bores are bright & shiny w/ no evidence of dents. Action is tight. Bbls. on face. Locks are crisp. A superb little quail gun w/ good measurements & dimensions. (21-1598/MGM). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
