SHOTGUN WITH QUARTERED OAK CASE. Cal. 8 bore. NSN. The 34" Damascus bbls. are unmarked on narrow concave rib. Patent breeches have platinum blowouts. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 8 gauge. There is no provision on bbls. or in stock for mounting a ramrod (pigeon guns and water fowlers were often configured this way). Breech iron is scroll engraved. Front spring locks with tall round bodied serpentine hammers are engraved with 60% coverage open shaded scroll. Trigger plate has stylized pineapple finial with scroll engraving. Trigger guard with dog engraving on bow has loop at rear forming grip. Stock of crotch figured European walnut measures 14 1/8" over steel buttplate with long top spur. Widely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip and around forend which has small horn tip. Stock attaches to bbls. with captive side bolt through oval steel escutcheons. Stock dimensions: DAH: 1 15/16+". DAC: 1 1/2-". CAST: approx. 1/2" off. LOP: 14 1/8". WEIGHT: 9 lbs. 13 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun comes with vintage quartered oak case with hook closure which has circular brass medallion on top. Interior is lined in green velvet, and a restored Edward Whistler label is in lid. Case contains brass 3 piece cleaning rod, rosewood handled nipple wrench and turn screw, 8 bore wad punch, round pewter oil bottle, empty can of percussion caps by Eley, a plain brass powder flask by Hawksley, throwing powder charges between 3 1/2 and 5 drams, along with a leather shot pouch. CONDITION: good. Metal parts cleaned to pewter gray patina; bbls. with considerable pitting overall. Stock has old oil refinish over many marks. Checkering somewhat worn. Bores are good, shiny, with some scattered pitting toward muzzles. Locks are good. Case exterior has new varnish applied over some marks. Interior cloth is very fine.
