GOOD QUALITY DOUBLE SCREW BARREL BOXLOCK

FLINTLOCK GREAT COAT PISTOL BY PAGE & CHRISTIAN OF NORWICH. Cal. 45. NSN (1782-84). Nicely turned 3 3/4" cannon bbls. have stars at front for wrench and are engraved "3" and "4" on bottoms. Matching numbers are on action. This gun is one of a pair (bbls. #1 and 2 would be found on its mate. Boxlock action has slide on right side to cover pan of right bbl. allowing left bbl. to be fired and not the right; or both to be fired simultaneously. Cock is reinforced and wide frizzen has hidden spring at top of action. Bottom of action is stamped with Birmingham proofs and is engraved with sprays of scroll. Maker's name is in ribbon on left side and "Norwich" is on right above pan selector slide. Trigger guard acts as a safety, locking cock at half cock position. Checkered walnut bag grip has grotesque mask silver cap which is hallmarked but hallmarks are not very legible except for a lion passant (sterling) and the top part of what appears to be an anchor (Birmingham). Date stamp appears to be an "F" (1778-9). CONDITION: good, metal parts a cleaned to pewter gray with pitting and frosting. Grip has old refinish; checkering recut. Bores are good with scattered pitting. Mechanically good. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20568/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,200-2,500.
