PLAINS RIFLE. Cal. 54. NSN. The 37" octagon barrel with under rib is stamped “S. HAWKEN” “ST. LOUIS” on top flat which is mounted with nicely file decorated leaf spring type buckhorn U-notch rear sight and steel blade front. Case hardened breechplug and iron are correctly styled. Old trade percussion lock marked “Joseph Golcher” has some scroll and sporting scene engraving. Rifle is fitted with double set triggers, maple half stock with steel cap affixes to barrel through two side bolts and is iron mounted. Trigger guard has loop at rear forming grip. Crescent buttplate has 4" return. Iron patchbox with fleur-di-lis finial is on right side of stock. An old cap box is set into top of comb and a brass oval engraved with a charging bison is on face of swept right hand cheekpiece. Hickory ramrod with brass tip mounts through two plain pipes and well filed thimble. Consignor’s tag states that this rifle was made by Tom Dawson, a well known Kentucky and Hawken rifle maker from the 50s and 60s (no signature found). CONDITION: good to fine with artificial aging. Bbl. retains most of its original brown with hand worn highlights and some vice marks at rear. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with hand worn highlights. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically good, triggers will not set, possibly need adjustment. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh (01-21264/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
