BY JP SAUER. Cal. 43 Mauser. S# 53156. Bbl. 25 3/4" tapered rnd. w/ integral matted rib engraved "J. P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" in milled out portion of rib. Rear single leaf U notch rear sight is dovetailed through & silver bead front is dovetail in from muzzle. Bbl. flats stamped w/ German black powder proofs & w/ crowns. Case hardened round bodied top lever action has nicely filed fences & is fitted w/ a right hand back spring peninsula lock w/ rebounding serpentine hammer. Left side has matching sideplate. A flip up tang sight nestles into long top strap. Action & locks engraved w/ 70% coverage well cut scroll w/ some floral highlights. Makers name & address are on each plate. Dbl. set triggers are fitted & steel trigger guard w/ matching scroll has horn extension fitted to bow. Steel capped pistol grip buttstock of well marbled dense European walnut measures 14 1/2" over deeply ribbed horn buttplate w/ ornamental grooves cut around outer edge. Stock also features right hand shadow line cheekpiece & cartridge trap w/ spaces for 4 cartridges on toeline. Matching slim splinter forend has Deeley release. STOCKS: LOP: 14 1/2". DAC: approx. 1 7/8". DAH: approx. 2 3/4". WEIGHT: 6 lbs., 1 oz. CONDITION: very good to fine. Bbl. retaining approx. 80% original blue w/ some thinning of finish & a scattering of rust which may clean. Action & lockplates retain a considerable amount, possibly as much as 30%, original case colors where protected, but are mostly bright silver w/ some scattered freckling. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish w/ a good scattering of light marks. Right side w/ some staining from spilled liquid. Horn parts w/ out worm damage. Checkering shows very light wear & has not been recut. Bore very good w/ strong rifling throughout & some scattered very light pitting. Action is tight. Lock is crisp. Triggers set. These fast handling rifles are hard to find, especially in lg. caliber. (01-19505/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-5,000.
