GRIFFIN & HOWE STYLED MAUSER RIFLE W/ “ZEISS”
SCOPE.
Cal. 7x57. NSN. Bbl. 24". This rifle w/ the look & styling of Griffin & Howe appears to have been done by either Seymour Griffin after leaving Abercrombie & Fitch, or by his protégé, Norris Morgan (See other Morgan rifles in this auction). The stock of 1950s & early ‘60s styling shows some of Norris Morgan’s stylistic differences from Griffin & Howe w/ shadowline of cheekpiece ending about an inch from the point of comb & fairly deep forend. The bolt handle is also beveled on top edges, similar to many other Norris Morgan rifles. Rifle presently has 24" medium weight sporter bbl. fitted by Fred Richardson III, locally renowned gunsmith of Essex, Massachusetts & past proprietor of Netherfield firearms. His signature is on left rear of bbl. Bbl. is fitted w/ Lyman island base w/ flip up rear sight & silver bead front & sleeved on ramp. Model 98 lg. ring action has top of receiver stippled. Lyman 57 receiver sight is installed along w/ base for Griffin & Howe side mount. Bolt knob is checkered in 2 panels & an FN type bolt shroud w/ model 70 safety fitted. A commercial trigger has been fitted. Bottom metal w/ hinged floorplate retained by lever at rear has some light scroll engraving & geometric borders. Stock of lightly marbled & somewhat figured European walnut measures 13 5/8" over steel model 70 type buttplate. Stock features swept shadowline right hand cheekpiece, steel grip cap, ebony forend tip, & well cut point pattern checkering at grip & around forend. A vacant gold oval & sling eye are on toeline. Rifle is fitted w/ “Zeiss” Diavari-C 1.5-4.5 scope w/ duplex reticle in Griffin & Howe rings & slide. CONDITION: very good as refinished, most probably when new bbl. was installed. Metal parts retaining nearly all of a rust blue w/ some scattered marks. Engraving on bottom metal somewhat softened. Stock w/ old oil refinish w/ a few minor dents & scratches. Checkering lightly worn. Bore is excellent, action is smooth. Scope has some light marks in exterior lacquer, optically clear. (20-3978/MGM112). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
