GROUPING OF EARLY BAYONETS FROM BRITISH EMPIRE.

1) Pattern 1876 Martini Henry. This socket bayonet has a 22" triangular blade. Blade marked on top w/ "broad arrow", "WD" / "89" & "view mark". Triangular leather scabbard w/ brass throat & tip. Throat is marked w/ "broad arrow" & "WD". CONDITION: bayonet blade has been polished over peppery oxidation; socket has case colored refinish; scabbard has wear, flexing & scuffing w/ loose stitching. Brass parts have dark worn patina.
2) Pattern 1888 MARKI Lee Metford 12" double edged blade. Left ricasso has "broad arrow". Right ricasso has numerous view marks. Smooth walnut grips retained by 2 brass rivets w/ oil holes. Pommel has lined out S#. Scabbard is not present. CONDITION: bright bayonet w/ considerable light pitting & oxidation.
3) Pattern 1913 w/ 17" fullered blade. Left ricasso is marked "1913", "W", "8-16". Right ricasso has several "view" marks. Walnut grips w/ 2 grooves. Leather scabbard marked on back "MANGROVITE'42". Scabbard has metal tips w/ khaki webbed frog. CONDITION: bayonet retains lg. percentage arsenal rework finish. Scabbard has moderate wear, scuffing & staining.
4) SMLE Pattern 1907 w/ 17" fullered blade. Mfg. in Australia by Lithgow. Left ricasso is marked w/ "star over shield", dated "1907" & additionally stamped "1918" & "Lithgow". Right ricasso has 2 "star" proofs & "opposed arrows" indicating sold out of service. Straight cross guard marked on right side "2ND M.D" & S#. Smooth walnut grips; birdshead pommel w/ non matching S#. Leather scabbard w/ metal tips, khaki & web frog. CONDITION: bayonet has 75% worn original finish; grips have moderate wear, staining & handling marks w/ 2 "bored soldier" angled grooves in left hand grip. Scabbard has wear, scuffing & staining.
5) Pattern 1907 bayonet w/ 17" fullered blade. Markings rendered obscure due to arsenal rework finish but '23 broad arrow & partial crown are visible. Smooth walnut grips. Leather scabbard w/ metal tips & green webbed frog. CONDITION: bayonet has lg. percentage of rework finish w/ blade retaining scattered fine pitting. Scabbard worn but serviceable condition.
6) India Pattern No. 1 MKII w/ 12" blade having false edge. Marked on left ricasso w/ "crown", "GRI", "MKII", "RFI" & "5" "43". Straight cross guard, smooth hardwood grips, birdshead pommel & brown leather scabbard w/ metal tips having khaki webbed frog. CONDITION: bayonet has 90% arsenal rework type finish w/ very light wear. Scabbard has light wear & staining.
7) India Pattern MKI "double star" w/ 12" fullered blade having false edge kept; fuller extends through tip as these are shortened pattern 1907 bayonets. Left ricasso is marked "MKI", "double star", "11" & "17". Right ricasso marked "FR56". Smooth hardwood grips, birdshead pommel. Leather scabbard w/ metal tips measures 13" overall. CONDITION: arsenal rework finish w/ heavy wear & thinning finish. Scabbard has moderate wear & staining throughout.
8) No. 5 MKII w/ 8" fullered blade marked on left ricasso w/ "F.R.I.". Smooth hardwood grips retained by 2 screws. Metal scabbard. CONDITION: bayonet & scabbard retain lg. degree of arsenal rework finish. (02-16813-4/RW). $600-900.
