Gallager Carbine .50 Cal SN: 8663
Rifle. Black powder breechloading saddle-ring carbine. Percussion. U.S. Civil War issued. In service 1861. Loaded from the rear with paper backed brass cases. Barrel moves forward, and tilts up, when triggerguard is lowered. Total of 17, 782 were sold to the Union Army, but frequently, cases stuck due to expansion. Only seen service in 1861. 22" round barrel, with 1861 rear 3-leaf sight. Missing front sight. Rifled bore appears good, but dirty. Saddle ring mounted on left side of wrist. Two-cock hammer locks up tight. triggerguard locks in place with catch lever. Walnut stock is good, with patch box on the right. Extra nipple in patch box. Steel buttplate. Masker and patent markings on lock plate are fades, mostly readable. Some surface rust on patch box, hammer, lock plate. Unfortunately, it appears someone has taken steel wool to the metal surfaces, leaving a scratched appearance on the metal. Some traces of blue in recessed areas A somewhat rare carbine. NRA Condition-Good. Antique Firearm.
