This is a German WW2 Waffen-SS Officer's tunic of a SS-Obersturmführer, (First lieutenant). Private purchase tunic with the tailors label of " F. Dumon 17 Vlamingstraak Poperinghe". Tailor F. Dumon operated a custom tailoring workshop out of Vlamingstraat 17 in Poperinge during World War II, serving as an important local logistical link for the Comet Line (Réseau Comète) escape network. The Comet Line was a massive underground resistance network used to smuggle downed Allied airmen out of Nazi-occupied Belgium and France. Shot-down Allied pilots needed authentic civilian clothing. Dumon used his shop at Vlamingstraat 17 to alter, adapt, or completely craft civilian suits for these escaping airmen. While the prominent Dumon family—including the heroic sister duo of Andrée ("Nadine") and Micheline ("Michou") Dumon—ran core operations out of Brussels, they were heavily involved in sheltering and guiding airmen, which resulted in the arrest and internment of the Dumon family by the Gestapo. The herringbone twill tunic has an original Waffen-SS Officers bullion sleeve eagle, hand embroidered in silver bullion on black woolen backing on the left sleeve, stitching is between the outside material and sleeve lining, sewn in shoulder boards with black wool underlay, piped in white for infantry, with metal pips denoting rank, they have evidence of devices being attached, four pleated scalloped flap pockets with fold back French cuffs. The collar is made of green wool with a zigzag reinforced bluish-green badge cloth back. Second pattern, SS-Obersturmführer left hand side rank collar tab features a black wool base with three natural aluminum rank pips and a narrow strip of woven silver/aluminum tress with an interwoven central black stripe, trimmed in twisted silver/aluminum piping and is mounted on a tan buckram base, matching right side SS Officer's Collar Tab, with the standard Double Sig/Victory Rune) bullion wire embroidered insignia, with a braided bullion border and tan buckram base. The tunic is fully lined with black rayon and it retains all of its original buttons. It has original loops for five badges, three medal ribbon bar with WW1 Iron Cross 2nd class with 1939 Spange device, War Merit Cross with Swords and the Sudetenland Medal. The second button hole has a hand sewn WW1 Iron Cross 2nd class ribbon with 1939 Spange. The left sleeve below the eagle has the stitched out-line of the Cholm Campaign shield. interior slit through the left lower pocket for dagger/sword hander, waist adjustment strap on rear liner. Unfortunately the collar tabs are pasted, not sewn to the collars which is reflected in the estimates. The tunic shows wear with a sewn repair to the collar and small tears, mostly to the upper right side.
