Gustave Young Engraved Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, with leather holster, as belonging to John Ward, 6th Iowa Cavalry, during the American Civil War, #145639 (IE), .36 cal., 7-1/2'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, with bone ivory grips. In later made and slightly modified brown leather holster. Mfg'd 1863. Revolver features near full coverage Germanic scrolls to case hardened iron frame, with typical light treatment to backstrap and triggerguard, with similar scrolls to upper and lower portion of backstrap, butt and guard. Barrel assembly shows similar coverage to lug and rear portion of ramrod. ''Sam'l Colt'' New York address with simple border treatment terminating in a pincer motif. Family research shows that after mustering out of the 6th Iowa Cavalry at the termination of the Civil War, John Ward became a seven-term sheriff in Wyoming Territory prior to it becoming a state. He was known throughout the territory for his courage and honesty, and in 1894 he took part in the arrest of Butch Cassidy. Condition is near fine retaining small amounts of blue in protected areas with mostly crisp and sharp engraving. All visible matching numbers, including wedge. Bolt stop screw with minor distortion. Grips show fractional shrinkage and very light marks from handling. Action remains crisp with clear touch holes, bore is very good. Leather holster with some repairs but has lost much of its stitching to the forward third. Est.: $7,500-$10,000. (Antique)
