HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE IN 30-30 WIN BY EDWARD

KETTNER. Cal. 30-30. S# 4181. It appears this unusual gun started as a 2 or 3 bbl. set of 12 Ga. dbl. shotgun, possible rifle shotgun combo & these remaining dbl. rifle bbls. All S# match & this action is obviously much wider than necessary were it's only a dbl. rifle. There is also a considerable amount of wear & exhibited use on action, which is not evident on bbls. 25 5/8" Dbl. rifle bbl. set are of Chopper Lump construction even though they appear to be have a mono bloc breech. Bbls. fitted w/ very broad (0.83") full length matted rib holding w/ 1 standing, 1 folding leaf express rear sight & silver bead front, dovetailed in. Tops of breech section are gold inlaid "Ed. Kettner" "KOLNa /RH". There are 1" triangles of well cut scroll on breech ends that match engraving on action in style. Bbl. flats stamped w/ pre 1896 black powder proofs. Bottoms of bbls. w/ S proofs & S# which matches action & forend in font. Case hardened top lever action fitted w/ front spring locks w/ sm. rnd. bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Action features crossbolt third fastener that engages square shouldered doll's head rib extension. Both triggers are set (only needed for dbl. rifle). Action & locks engraved w/ near full coverage well cut varying sized scroll. Lightly figured & well streaked European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 1/8" over nicely checkered horn buttplate. Stock features shadow line right hand cheekpiece & closely spaced flat top point pattern checkering at grip. Splinter forend w/ inlet & nicely schnabeled horn tip has Deeley release. Engraving, metal color & checkering pattern matches action & buttstock perfectly. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: LOP: 14 1/8". DAC: approx. 1 7/8"+. DAH: approx. 3 1/8". WEIGHT: 9 lbs., 7 oz. CONDITION: bbls. retaining approx. 80% of what appears to be original blue w/ some silvering on sharp edges & scattered rubs & marks. Action & locks retain perhaps as much as 40% of an old rehardening over a few errant minor pits. Engraving slightly softened. Trigger guard w/ considerable cleaning to bright silver over scattered pitting. Stocks w/ old oil refinish over some scattered light marks. Checkering lightly worn & has not been recut. There is a repaired crack on left side running from rear of lockplate to trigger plate behind rear trigger, which does not flex, traces of crack do not appear anywhere else. Bores are good, a bit dark w/ strong rifling throughout. Action is tight. Locks operable. (21-2651/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.
