HAND AXES, POLE ARM HEADS & KNIFE.
A mixture of early & late weapons of interesting style & form. 1) BOARDING AX. Overall length: 17 1/2". Head width: 7". Iron head has a 3" blade combined w/ a 2 3/4" pike. The ears extend nearly 8" down the haft. Because of weight & overall reinforced construction, we believe this is an early boarding ax. At the top of 1 ear are 2 holes that likely originally attached an iron belt hook. The wooden haft, though early, is possibly not original to the head. CONDITION: head has a dark gray, mottled patina. Wood has a smooth, lightly worn finish. 2) SMALL AX. Overall length: 10 3/8". Head width: 4". Iron head is decorated on both sides w/ a heart & foliate motifs. The top is decorated w/ what appears to be an arrow fletch. Stylized curved wooden haft has a scroll motif at the butt. CONDITION: head has a dark, somewhat mottled patina. Haft has a smooth lightly worn finish. 3) HALBERD HEAD. Overall length: 12 1/2". Width: 5 5/8". Iron head has a 3" blade combined w/ a 3" flat spike at the top & a heavily curved hook opposite the blade. Blade is stamped “J.PETT” w/ an illegible mark after the final “T”. Halberd appears to have a solid tang w/ a 2" iron collar supplying extra support. A partial wooden haft approx. 7" long is attached. CONDITION: head has an overall dark oxidized patina w/ numerous nicks to the blade edge. Wooden haft shows great age. 4) HALBERD HEAD. Overall length: 22". Width: 8 1/2". A lg. hand forged, crude iron head w/ numerous stamped dot & cross decorations throughout. Hollow shaft to facilitate insertion of a pole w/ securing pole near the base. Quarter moon shaped blade w/ 3 pointed thorn. CONDITION: dark overall patina. 5) BELT AX. A modern reenactor type belt ax measuring 12 1/2" overall w/ a 7" head. Complete w/ fringed leather sheath. CONDITION: blade has a bright finish. Haft shows light wear. Sheath shows moderate wear. 6) BELT KNIFE. A late 19th century belt knife measuring 14" overall w/ an 8 3/4" modified unmarked bowie blade. Iron crossguard. 2 Piece wood grips w/ crosshatching. Modern cream colored leather sheath w/ fringe.
