ALAN MARTIN. Cal. 50. NSN. Alan Martin is known as a collector of fine Kentucky's & also a builder of good quality, nicely aged contemporary rifles. This rifle has 46" nicely swamped octagon bbl. engraved "A. Martin" on top flat. Rear sight dovetail has slot filled & an aperture rear sight installed on tang. Touchhole is bushed. Cast Siler type left hand flintlock has serpentine cock, inset faceted pan w/ fence, bridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ spear finial. Stock of very attractive, closely grained curly maple extends to muzzle without cap & is pinned to bbl. A classic fluted cheekpiece is on right side of butt & a patchbox w/ sliding wood cover is on left. Stock features incised line carving along bbl. channel, around lock & sideplate. This carving has scroll terminations behind top tang & cheekpiece. Stock is brass mounted. Trigger guard has spur at rear forming grip. Early style buttplate w/ broad top tang does not have a return on toeline. Early style long sideplate has well shaped finial at rear & a hickory ramrod mounts through two beaded brass pipes & matching thimble. A silver oval at top of grip is engraved "MC". CONDITION: very fine. Bbl. & lock are an artificially aged gray to brown w/ overall intentional light pitting. Sharp edges of bbl. slightly rounded. Stock has fine artificially worn patina to its original oil finish. Brass is nicely toned. The overall appearance is of an exceptionally fine original Kentucky rifle. Rifle shows very little use. Bore is bright & shiny. Frizzen shows relatively few strikes. Mechanically good. (01-20988/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
