KENTUCKY RIFLE WITH RARE INITIALED STOCK CARVING. Cal. 52 rifled. NSN. Bbl. 38" full oct. Overall length 53 1/4". Buttstock 4" high, 1 1/4" wide. Rifle has a nice curly maple stock that has elaborate script incise carved “DA” on the left-hand side of the butt, single set trigger. The brass 4 piece patchbox side panels are attractively separate from the door. The English warranted flintlock is worn, but appears to be original flint w/ distinctive sm. based cock. The bbl. is script engraved “DA” in same ornate style as carved. David Albright is listed in Haines township Centre County ca. 1825, he was a son of Jacob Albright, who later moved to Illinois. CONDITION: shows signs of wear from heavy use. Lock & bbl are cleaned w/ overall gray/bright patina w/ pitting, good markings. Stock is sound, well fit w/ hand worn patina. Sideplate has an added wood screw, probably indicating it may have lifted from shrinkage. Gun has a silver wrist inlay & a silver half-moon cheekpiece inlay. Top leaf of patchbox should be reset due to wood shrinkage, mechanically fine w/ clear rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19531/RG). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,500.
