"AVANT TOUT" EJECTOR HEAVY PROOF PIGEON GUN. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 28338. Mfg. 1904. Bbls. 30" are of shoelump construction & are fitted w/ slightly raised narrow matted, flat, (pigeon) rib. Tops of bbls. engraved w/ maker's name "THE AVANT TOUT" & w/ C&H's 141 New Bond St. & 226 Strand addresses. Bbl. flats stamped w/ London Nitro proofs for 1 1/4 oz. shot (2 3/4" chambers). Bottoms of bbls. stamped w/ Arcus steel logos & bbls. are fitted w/ famous C&H "Avant Tout" ejector spring housing. Case hardened sideplated boxlock action features automatic safety, hidden crossbolt 3rd fastener, & dbl. triggers. Action & sideplates engraved w/ fairly dramatic lg. open shaded scroll w/ smaller scroll tendrils & highlights. Maker's name is at the bottom of each sideplate. Top lever, floorplate & trigger guard are blued & engraved w/ matching scroll. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Prince of Wales grip buttstock of well marbled & lightly figured European walnut measures 14 1/4" over ribbed wood butt on tapered lengthening piece. This piece most likely replaces a buttplate or recoil pad & is fitted to the original curve. Original wood measures 13 1/2" which would give 14 1/2" w/ a pad. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip & a vacant silver oval is on toeline. Matching splinter forend w/ inlet metal tip has roller friction release & is fitted w/ trips for ejector system. The "Sandhurst" was a middle grade C&H gun which retailed for 26 guineas in 1906. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore diameter: right .731", left .729". Restriction: right .033" (FULL), left .030" (FULL). Min. Wall Thickness: right .033", left .033". STOCK: LOP: 14 1/4". DAC: 1 5/8". DAH: 2 1/8". Cast: approx. 1/4" on. WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: extra fine, nearly all original. Bbls. retaining over 95% original blue w/ some scattered flecking, slightly silvered on sharp edges. Action & lockplates retain over 95% original case hardening color w/ silver highlights on fences, sharp edges & top tang. Blued parts are also excellent w/ some light silvering on thumb piece, a bit of flaking on right side of trigger plate & some silvering & loss on trigger guard tang. Stocks retain most of what is likely their original oil finish w/ old refinish at rear of butt w/ installation of lengthening piece. Checkering is lightly worn & somewhat dirty. A few diamonds are missing from forend. There is a fairly deep 3/4" dent on left side of comb. Bores are bright & shiny, action is tight, bbls. are on face. Ejectors in time. This is a VERY nice gun.
