HIGH CONDITION GOOD QUALITY 8 BORE DOUBLE

PERCUSSION SHOTGUN BY J. FARSON. Cal. 8 Ga. NSN. Large bore shotguns like this were generally used in harsh, salty, wet environments and are seldom found in high original condition. This good quality British double gun remains in exceptional original condition. It has 36" twist (laminated) steel barrels. Top of rib is engraved "J. Farson London Laminated Steel". Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs, gauge "9" and "ROSES PATENT No 20". (The Rose Brothers (Hales-Owen Mills & Forge) were barrel makers located in Halesowen, Worcestershire, operating between 1860 and 1892). Case hardened breech plugs have some scroll engraving on rib extention. Both hooks and bottom of right barrel are stamped with barrel maker's mark "JA". No blowouts are present. Case hardened breech iron is also scroll engraved. Front spring locks with tall chamfered serpentine hammers have geometric borders around sprays of scroll. "J. Farson" is on each lockplate. Trigger guard has extended vase shaped finial; it and trigger guard are also scroll engraved. Straight grip stock of relatively plain European walnut measures 13 7/8" over blued steel buttplate with short top spur. Point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip and forend. A vacant German silver oval is on toeline. Stock attaches to barrels with captive sidebolt through shaped and line engraved steel escutcheons. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and thimble which matches trigger plate. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .826". R .826". Barrels retaining over 95% original brown finish with some scattered light freckling and show good definition to pattern. Nearly all vibrant case hardening color remains on breech plug, breech iron, locks and trigger plate. Some sharp edge wear is noted on hammers. Breech iron tang has begun to silver at rear. Original blue on trigger guard is almost all flaked to brown and silver. A good amount of blue remains on inside of guard. Silvering is noted on barrel bolt and thimble from normal hand wear, as this is the balance point of this fairly heavy gun. There is about 70% original blue remaining on buttplate. Stock retains over 95% original oil finish with some scattered light marks, along with a 1/2" bump which is fairly deep on right side of comb. Bores are bright and shiny throughout. Gun does not appear to have ever been fired. Nipples remain bright. Locks are crisp. (01-21789/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
