SHOT DROPPING BLOCK RIFLE WITH RIBBED BARREL. Cal. 303 British. S# 5843 (1897). Bbl. 25 1/2" is fitted with full length matted integral rib. Rib is milled such that one standing, 5 folding leaf rear sight is held by a broader portion of rib to give full support. Silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into slightly wider portion of rib at muzzle. Birmingham black powder proofs are at breech end with additional marking "31GRS Cordite MAXm". Case hardened Jeffery type 1 dropping block action is engraved on left side with circular belt and legend: "W. J. JEFFREY & CO. 13 KING STREET St. JAMES'S STREET". The central portion is engraved "London" "5843". Otherwise, action has border engraving of small scroll. Right side has pivoting safety lever and is engraved "SAFE" at top position. Serial number is also on base of operating lever. Top tang is drilled and tapped for special Lyman sight which was often supplied by Jeffery. Horn capped pistol grip buttstock of nicely marbled European walnut measures 14" over checkered steel buttplate with trap (trap holds cleaning rod). Point pattern checkering is at grip and a sling eye matching that soldered to bottom of bbl. is on toeline. Matching slim forend with horn tip screws to bbl. and is of Turner style (Thomas Turner produced many Farquahrson rifles for Jeffery). CONDITION: very fine. Bbl. retaining about 70% original blue turning to brown overall and with some sharp edgewear. Action retains 70-80% original case hardening color which has somewhat faded and also shows silvering on high edges and tangs. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over many marks and scratches. Checkering is lightly worn and has not been recut. Bore is good with strong rifling throughout; dark in grooves. Action is smooth. When on "SAFE", hammer will partially fall. Safety cannot be operated until rifle is recocked. (01-21687/MGM). ANTIQUE. $6,000-7,500.
