BREECH SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 Ga. S# X952 (1923?). The top of the cataloged Darne line the V22 is a very well finished gun. This small gauge example has 29 1/2" monobloc bbls. with narrow matted rib gold inlaid with retailer "B-H-DYAS". Rear of monobloc is engraved with 8 triangles of well cut small scroll. Bbl. flats and bottoms of bbls. are stamped with French nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers and later stamped "70" indicating that the chambers were lengthened. There are 12 grade stamps along bottom of monobloc "V22". Coin finished Darne action, with later style sliding breech block with obturating disks and top locking bolt, has safety on left side, and is fitted with double triggers. Bbls. are removed using push button latch on bottom of action in trigger plate. A sunken cartouche in operating lever is marked "DARNE". Action is engraved with near full coverage large flowing and scrolling acanthus with small scroll as background. Rose bouquet highlights are found on opening lever and trigger guard bow. This well done work surrounds game scenes on top of slide depicting ducks sitting in a marsh. Fences are deeply relief carved in acanthus motif. Bottom of trigger plate has open area engraved with initials "RN" over "MADE IN FRANCE" inlaid in gold. Two piece stocks of well streaked European walnut are nicely checkered. Buttstock measures 15 1/2" over black white line pad. Front piece of stock has inlet horn tip and checkering is more closely space than on buttstock. CAST: approx. 1/2" on. LOP: 15 1/2". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 3 oz. CONDITION: fine as partially refinished and refurbished. Bbls. retaining approx. 90% reblack with some subsequent rusting and cleaning 8" from breech end. Some gold inlay is missing. Action retains most of its original coin finish. Newly made buttstock retains nearly all of its shiny oil finish with some light marks. Checkering with little wear. Original forepiece has been refinished to match buttstock; checkering somewhat worn. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is smooth. (22-1007/MGM). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
