HIGH QUALITY HAMMER SHOTGUN BY EDWIN THOMAS JR. OF
CHICAGO W/ BBLS. BY THOMAS L. GOLCHER OF PHILADELPHIA. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4". NSN. Bbls. 30". This gun looks like a collaboration between 2 very high quality makers & incorporates many of the best known patents of the age. 30" Very high grade Damascus bbls. are engraved "Barrels by Tho. L. Golcher No 116 W. Gerard Ave. Philadelphia PA." on concave game rib w/ square shouldered doll's head extension. There are no other marks on bbls. except "LE" on bottom of left bbl. Finely made action incorporates Purdey under bolting system operated by thumb lever, w/ access through trigger guard bow. Lever also actuates a sliding dovetailed bolt which engages rib extension in a manner similar to that used by D.M. Lefever in his early guns. Action is fitted w/ front spring side locks w/ rnd. bodied serpentine hammers. Action is nicely filed & engraved w/ 90% coverage, very nicely cut miniscule scroll w/in line & scroll borders. This scroll surrounds some game scenes w/ portrait of spaniel retrieving snipe on bottom of action & nicely detailed pointing pointer at rear of left lockplate & alert setter on right. Steel trigger guard has tang that extends to engraved steel grip cap. Buttstock appears to be of somewhat figured dense American walnut & measures 14" over engraved steel skeleton buttplate. Stock also features drop points & closely spaced point pattern checkering at grip. Matching splinter forend w/ inlet steel tip has Deely type release which engages broad hooked loop similar to that found on guns by H. A. Lindner. MEASUREMENTS: BARRELS: Bore diameter: R .726 L .727.
