LOCKFAST" HAMMERGUN. Cal. 16 Ga., 2 5/8". S# 2498 (1866). Bbls. 27" (appears original, keels present at muzzle) two stripe Damascus are engraved "J. D. DOUGALL INVENTOR & PATENTEE 59 ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON NO 2498" on swamped game rib. Bbls. have been converted from pinfire and there are engraved featherbursts at breech ends around plugged pinholes. Round bodied action with penninsula backspring locks having Serpentine non-rebounding hammers has lever on right side which turns eccentric pin pulling bbls. forward so that they disengage from bosses on breech face before bbls. can open. Bottom of action is engraved "Dougall's Patent Lockfast" refering to this exceptionally strong and popular early locking system. Action and locks are engraved with about 60% coverage of exceptionally well cut large shaded scroll. Maker's name is at the top of each lockplate. Action has been altered to pinfire, possibly by factory, with the addition of early style firing pins, hammers replaced and engraved to match action. Trigger guard with matching scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Well marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 3/8" over checkered wood butt with steel heel and toeplates. Matching splinter forend with shaped steel tip is near fully checkered and attaches to bbls. with captive sidebolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .687", L .687". Restriction: R .002" (IC), L .003" (IC) (gun was made before the invention of choke). Min. Wall Thickness: R .027", L .030". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/2". DAC: 1 3/4". LOP: 14 3/8". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 7 oz. CONDITION: good, bbls. retaining most of their original brown Damascus finish with good definition to pattern. Action and lockplates have traces of original case hardening color where protected, but also have areas coated with oil. Traces of blue remain on trigger guard. Stocks have added oil over what appears to be their original finish over many light marks. Checkering is worn. Bores are quite good and shiny with light frosting toward breech ends. There are dents needing repair in both bbls. about 5" behind muzzles. Action is tight. Locks are fine. (01-21616/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,500.
