Wendell Grangaard of South Dakota has unlocked the key to "togia", the pictographic language of the Cheyenne & Sioux Plains Indians. In his book "Documenting the Weapons used at the Little Big Horn", Mariah Press, 2015, Mr. Grangaard opens a window on western history by translating the Togia markings on historic Indian used weapons. Togia markings on this rifle, as translated by Mr. Grangaard, show this rifle to have been at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, which is known to Native Americans as the Battle of Greasy Grass. Markings on this rifle include the name "Thunders Tail". Additionally Mr. Grangaard states that markings on the stock reveal the message "rode together-Chief Crazy Horse-Low Dog-Battle Greasy Grass" as well as Lakota Warrior Society symbols. Thunders Tail biographical information supplied by Mr. Grangaard states "Thunders Tail was born in 1850, the son of the great chief Black Twin." & "Thunders Tail rode with Crazy Horse his entire adult life". Thunders Tail and his family surrendered in 1881 at Fort Buford as part of Big Road's Band, and they were transferred to the Pine Ridge Reservation. The entire family died from a white man's disease sometime before the 1890 Census.
