U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Flintlock Infantry Musket, Early Transitional Model, NVSN, .69 cal., 42'' round barrel marked with ''US'' and ''(eagle head)/P'' oval cartouches at breech, blade front sight made integral with double-strap top band and an integral socket bayonet lug at muzzle; beveled-edge lockplate with pointed teat at rear is marked with a spread-eagle holding olive branches and a shield having ''US'' within ahead of the flint cock and ''Harpers/Ferry/1816'' vertically behind; iron furniture including one-piece triggerguard with sling swivel at front, serpentine sideplate, three spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel), buttplate, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1816. This musket appears to be in original flintlock configuration (touchhole may have been refurbished long ago, but difficult to discern), having the early transition features of integral iron flashpan and stock comb of standard height. Likely originally finished in military ''bright,'' with case hardened lockplate. Condition is very good, the metal with an old cleaned gunmetal gray patina showing scattered discoloration overall and light black powder pitting at breech, with sharp edges and clear markings. Stock is solid and mostly smooth with general marks of age and use, nice color, a sharp ''U/JS'' and ''V/AT'' inspector's cartouches on raised sideplate apron and ''CN'' behind rear triggerguard tang. Action is smooth and strong; smoothbore is clean and bright. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
