U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, by Harpers Ferry Armory, altered to percussion by the nipple-threaded-into-barrel method, with bayonet, NVSN, .69 cal., 42'' barrel with bayonet lug at muzzle is marked ''P/(eagle head)/V'' at breech, ''1838'' on top tang, and has three spring-retained barrel bands (top band of the double-strap type with integral blade front sight and ramrod channel, middle band with sling swivel); bevel-edge lockplate pointed at rear is marked with a spread-wing eagle over ''U.S.'' beneath the brass pan remnant and ''Spring/Field/1838'' vertically behind the hammer; other steel furniture consisting of a serpentine sideplate, triggerguard marked ''SP/S'' on front tang, with a long rear tang and sling swivel at front of bow, buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock with its unique-to-Model-1816 low comb has two inspector's cartouches (faint) on sideplate apron and another below bottom triggerguard tang. Condition is very good, the barrel, barrel bands, lockplate and hammer in toned ''arsenal bright'' finish, the balance of the iron parts showing a deep age-brown patina with occasional roughness. Stock shows the expected marks of age and long military use but sound and generally smooth. Action is very strong; smoothbore is bright. Bayonet is a smooth gunmetal color with ''U.S.'' marked at the elbow. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
