Heavy Barrel Remington No. 1 Rolling Block Single Shot Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .45-70 CF cal., 28'' blued heavyweight octagonal barrel has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and a sliding ramp buckhorn rear sight, marked ''E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A.'' on top flat ahead of breech and ''45-70'' on bottom flat ahead of forend; large No. 1-size case hardened steel receiver is marked on top tang ''E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A.'' followed by nine patent dates in three lines total; two-piece varnished walnut stocks including forend with Schnabel tip and buttstock with checkered steel rifle buttplate. Mfg'd 1868-88. Condition is excellent. Barrel retains approx. 95% original blue finish with occasional scratches and minor losses (especially at front sight); the hammer, breechblock, triggerguard and buttplate are a smooth gunmetal gray. Stocks (having carved raised aprons in front of and behind receiver on both sides) are solid and smooth with good color and a soft varnish finish. Edges and markings are sharp (Remington address and patent dates on top tang are partially obscured by drilled/tapped holes for a tang sight (not present). Action is smooth and strong; bore is bright, shiny and with pronounced rifling. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)
