A heavy gold silk general officers dress sash having five machined rows of integral red brocade woven in a horizontal diced pattern. With two gold tassels, each having two applied silver stars on either side of the neck above the tassel skirt, terminating in thick gold bullion coils. Whether a specific decorative feature or an indicator of rank, the precise context of the silver stars is unknown. We speculate that the sash was likely English made.

For context, the military sash had been attributed to General John Bell Hood by the current institutional owner, having been displayed as such with other Hood artifacts in several museum exhibitions as recently as 2015. Moreover, the institutional documentation had noted two similar existent examples, one owned by Simon Bolivar Bucker (Museum of the Confederacy) and another attributed to N.B. Forrest (whereabouts unknown) based on a published photograph. However, none of the examples conform strictly to published Confederate Uniform Regulations (Richmond, 1861) for general officers. Lacking satisfactory provenance we are unable to endorse the Hood attribution.

Condition Report: Sash body in good aged condition. The thick gold bullion tassel coils are generally distressed appearing to have been stretched out of normal shape.
