IDENTIFIED CIVIL WAR UNION EAGLE DECORATED DRUM.
Drum measures 17" in height & 17" in diameter. It has red painted rims w/ full heads top & bottom. The wooden body is elaborately brass tack decorated around the vent hole. The painted eagle is on a dark blue field & features a ribbon that reads, “REGT US INFANTRY”. There is a glory above the eagle’s head & a federal shield on its chest. The eagle grasps olive branches in the right talon & arrows in the left. Ropes have been replaced but are correct & attractive on this drum. Leather tugs appear original. The interior of the drum has a tag that reads, “B.F. Gilmore 25th O.V.I.”. There is also a maker’s label that reads in part, “C.M. ZIMMERMANN’S PATENT DRUM MANUFACTORY NO. 238 NORTH SECOND ST., PHILA., PA MUSICAL ALL KINDS OF INSTRUMENTS & STRINGS, IMPORTED, MANUFACTURED, AND SOLD; WHOLESALE AND RETAIL”. The name on the interior of the drum pertains to Benjamin F. Gilmore, who was the principle musician for the 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from June 12, 1861, when he initially enlisted for 3 years, until June 18, 1866, when he mustered out of service. The 25th Ohio Infantry had an extensive battle history that included Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Fort Wagner, Charleston, SC & many more battles. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 3 pages of information relating to Gilmore & the 25th Ohio. CONDITION: rims have original painted finish w/ expected wear at the top. The top head is worn but undamaged. The bottom head shows little wear but has a sm. split near the edge. The eagle painting shows significant wear after 5 years of hard field service & numerous battles. Surprisingly the eagle & field remain approximately 70% complete & though worn, the details are easily discernible. A great identified drum to a well fought heroic unit. (02-14723/BF). $2,500-3,500.
