IDENTIFIED CONFEDERATE TENNESSEE TIN DRUM
CANTEEN AND SLING. This fine regulation Confederate tin drum canteen belonged to Private Rederick Pierce Ennis of Company E of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. The canteen is hand engraved in a folky manner on the front, “R P E” over “3d TENNESSEE V MTD”. The canteen measures 6 3/4" in diameter & 2 3/4" deep and amazingly retains its original brown leather sling w/ brass button stud. Private R.P. Ennis was a member of the famous 3rd Tennessee Cavalry serving in Company E. They fought in many major battles as well as minor skirmishes under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Private Ennis also served for a time in Company A of the 24th Alabama Infantry. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: papers relating to the service of Pvt. Ennis along w/ the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry & the 24th Alabama Infantry. CONDITION: canteen has an overall gray patina. There are numerous sm. dents & dings particularly on the front face of the canteen. The engraving is a bit light but can be easily read w/ a strong raking light. Canteen appears to have the original cork. Leather carrying strap is dry but remains quite solid. PROVENANCE: From the Renowned Collection of Allen & Robin Wandling. (02-13999/BF). $1,500-2,500.
