IDENTIFIED M1840 CIVIL WAR MEDICAL OFFICER’S

SWORD. Overall length: 36 1/2". Blade length: 30 1/4". Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various foliate motifs including a panel that reads, “U.S. Medical Staff”. Solid brass gilded hilt features an eagle in oval on the front of the grip. The rear grip panel is engraved “Alan. Cameron Livingstone 1861.”. The front languet has “MS” over 13 stars. The rear languet is engraved, “WS LIVINGSTONE 1877”. William Livingston was the son of Alan C. Livingston who died childless. William’s sister married Frank Platt, an important lawyer educated at Yale College. Also on the rear languet appears the name, “LIVINGSTONE PLATT 1907”. Livingston Platt was the son of Caroline & Frank Platt & inherited the sword. This fine sword features a gilded brass scabbard w/ embellished mounts. Alan Cameron Livingston a surgeon of the 110th New York Infantry. The record shows that he enlisted on 7/29/1862 & was discharged 1/15/1864. The 110th New York initially served in the Defense of Baltimore then was deployed to New Orleans, Louisiana. They saw hard service in Port Hudson, Bayou Plaquemine & Baton Rouge. It is apparent that this sword remained in the Livingston family from its initial use during the Civil War through the Indian War w/ another surgeon of the family & possibly even to WWI w/ still another surgeon from the Livingston family. A medical sword w/ a more long & honored service would be difficult to find. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: provenance about Alan Livingston & his heirs. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing gray finish w/ minor mottled discoloration toward the tip. Hilt retains 50% of original gilding. Scabbard is undamaged & retains 60% original gilding.
