CARBINE. Cal. 8mm Mauser. S# 3361NN. All visible numbers match. 23 3/4" bbl. Tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight w/ protective ears. The original short Model 98 carbines did not prove successful due to excessive muzzle blast & recoil. They were replaced by the longer KAR98 starting in 1908. The sm. ring receiver is marked on top "ERFURT" imperial crown "1917". Receiver marked on right side w/ imperial proofs. Marked on left side w/ eagle acceptance mark. Marked on left rail in fractur is "Kar98". Bolt handle is turned down. Knob is flattened & checkered on the underside. Hinged upper band. Stacking bar & bayonet lug are present. Stock set has beech buttstock & walnut hand guard. Buttstock is made w/ grasping grooves & slot for side sling. Equipped w/ steel disassembly disk. Right side of butt has faint imperial monograms & "B" indicates a beech stock. CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework type finish over wear, staining & moderate handling marks w/ slight loss of wood in inletted areas & softening of edges. Buttstock has sm. crack behind receiver tang & checks plus fine cracks on both sides of butt. Hand guard has chipping issues at rear edge. Worn metal turning gray & patina w/ light oxidation plus areas of fine pitting throughout. Worn bore turning dark in grooves. (23-2228/RW). CURIO. $500-700.
